The feel-good, brass wielding rockers in Less Than Jake tore through Philly’s Trocadero Theater with Anti-Flag and Masked Intruder firmly in tow. The love runs deep for both Less Than Jake and Anti-Flag in Philadelphia, who both preceded to break into frenetic sets that immediately captivated the near-capacity audience.
Twenty-two years deep in the music game, Less Than Jake are currently supporting their ninth studio album, See The Light, that was released in 2013 via Fat Wreck Chords. PopMatters commented on the album saying, “LTJ, while having a goofy streak, have always had a strong work ethic that’s been reflected in their high energy live shows. This album doesn’t quite have the “oomph” of their best work, but it won’t be a disappointment to their fans.” And this evening in Philadelphia sure was far from a disappointment. LTJ hit the stage with an infectious energy that has stayed with them for more than two decades, while they proceeded to deliver a great mix of both classic and new songs alike. Pittsburgh’s Anti-Flag are also celebrating a ninth studio album, The General Strike, which also celebrates 20+ years in the punk rock world. Sputnik Music commented on the album saying “With 12 songs at a mere 27 minutes, The General Strike is straight and to the point punk that still carries traces of their big production major label experiment with its polished tones and big choruses. Even so, there’s enough grit included, mostly from Chris #2’s bark, to raise a few eyebrows, even on those who gave up on Anti-Flag when they started busting out the acoustic guitars and the big picture albums.”
We had the opportunity to catch up with Anti-Flag founding member Pat Thetic for an exclusive interview just as the album was being released where he commented on the title saying, “ I haven’t got the chance to talk about this in any of the other interviews I’ve done– Is that the strike, or the boycott (which the strike is essentially a boycott of work) are really the only tools the population has to fight against power. If you use violence, people in power always have more access to violence than the population does. So the only way of getting any type of change in the world is through withholding purchasing or withholding work. And The General Strike is bringing that idea back because in the US we haven’t used strikes very much.” It was recently announced Anti-Flag will be playing Coachella 2014 in Indio, CA this April.
